Why your Google listing and website should match

By Mesih · Published October 13, 2026 · 3 min read

Short answer: Your business name, phone number, address or service area, hours and services should read the same on your Google listing and your website. Google says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local results. Matching details also stop customers from calling a wrong number or arriving when you are closed.

Your Google listing and your website should say the same thing about your business: the same name, phone number, address or service area, hours and services. When they differ, customers get confused, and confused customers move on to the next business.

Google also asks for accurate details. It does not say that matching details push you up the rankings, and we will not claim it either. What it does say is worth knowing, so let's start there.

What does Google say?

Google's tips page for local ranking says three things decide how local results are ordered: relevance, distance and prominence. It also says businesses with complete and accurate information are more likely to show up in local search results. See Google's local ranking tips.

Google is also plain that you cannot buy a better spot. Its page says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking. What you can control is whether your details are complete and right.

Why mismatches cost you customers

Picture a customer who finds you on Google, then opens your website to check prices. The phone number on the site is an old one. Or the hours differ. Which one do they trust? Often neither, so they try someone else.

In our view, this is the main reason to match your details. It is about trust, not tricks. To go deeper on how the two work together, read Google Business Profile or a website: which comes first?

Name

Google says to enter your business name exactly as it appears on your real world signage, stationery and other branding. Its guidelines add that the name should not carry taglines, hours, phone numbers or web addresses.

So pick one version of your name and use it on the listing, the website, your Facebook page and your invoices.

Phone number

Google's guidelines ask for a phone number that connects to your individual business, and a local number where possible. You can add up to three numbers in all on your profile. Pick the one customers should call first, and put that same one at the top of your website.

Address or service area

If customers come to you, give the same full street address in both places.

If you go to customers, Google's service-area page says to remove your address from your profile when you do not serve customers there. You then name the areas you cover, up to 20 cities, postal codes or other areas. Google says you cannot use a radius, and that your whole area should not go beyond about two hours of driving from your base. Say the same areas on your website. Changes to service areas can take up to 48 hours to show after approval, according to that page.

Hours

Google asks for your regular customer-facing hours, and lets you add special hours for holidays. Update the site and the listing on the same day. For the details, see how to get your business hours right online.

Website link and services

Your profile has a website field. Google says to enter the full address, starting with http:// or https://, and to make sure Googlebot is not blocked from your site. Your site should also list the same main services you have on the profile. Not sure what to put on the page? Read what every small business website should say.

Copy and fill in this checklist

Copy this into your notes app and fill it in once. Then use it every time you update anything.

  • Name:
  • Phone:
  • Address or service area:
  • Hours (regular and holiday):
  • Website:
  • Main services:

Now check each line in four places: your Google profile, your website, your Facebook page and any other listing you have. Change anything that differs. Google reviews changes before they go live on a profile, so allow some time.

Where bizhq is the weaker choice

A free bizhq site has fixed pages (home, services, about, contact), and its address is yourname.bizhq.page, not your own .com. Put that exact address in your Google website field. See do I need a website if I have a Facebook page? for how the pieces fit.

What to do next

  1. Fill in the checklist above.
  2. Compare it with your Google profile today.
  3. Fix your website to match, or the other way round.
  4. Set a reminder to recheck whenever you move, change hours or change your number.
